Why the summer is a good time to bring home a puppy
Bringing home a new puppy is an exciting milestone, and while there’s never a bad time to welcome a furry family member, summer offers some unique advantages that can help set both you and your puppy up for success.
More Time Together
For many families, summer means a slower schedule. School is out, vacations are planned, and there are often more opportunities to spend quality time at home. Those first few weeks are incredibly important for bonding, establishing routines, and helping your puppy adjust to their new environment.
The more time you can spend together during this transition, the more confident your puppy will feel.
Easier Potty Training
One of the biggest benefits of summer is the weather. Frequent trips outside are a major part of puppyhood, and warm temperatures make potty training much more comfortable for both puppies and their owners.
Without snow, ice, or freezing temperatures, it’s easier to stay consistent with outdoor bathroom breaks. Consistency is one of the keys to successful potty training, and summer makes that much easier.
More Opportunities for Socialization
The early months of a puppy’s life are critical for socialization. During summer, there are more opportunities to safely introduce your puppy to new sights, sounds, people, and experiences.
Neighborhood walks, outdoor gatherings, farmers markets, patio visits, and family activities can all provide valuable exposure that helps your puppy grow into a confident adult dog.
Plenty of Outdoor Exercise
Puppies have lots of energy to burn! Summer provides more opportunities for outdoor play. Whether it’s exploring the backyard, taking short walks, or practicing training sessions outside, your puppy can enjoy a variety of activities that support both physical and mental development.
Easier Training Opportunities
Training happens everywhere, not just in formal classes. Summer allows you to practice basic obedience and manners in a variety of settings. From working on leash walking around the neighborhood to practicing “sit” and “stay” in the backyard, your puppy will have countless opportunities to learn and grow.
The more positive experiences they have during these early months, the stronger their foundation becomes.
Creating Summer Memories
There’s something special about experiencing a puppy’s first summer. From backyard adventures to family vacations and evening walks, these moments quickly become cherished memories.
Many families find that bringing home a puppy during the summer allows everyone to participate in the puppy’s early milestones and enjoy the excitement together.
About CVL
Colonial Village Labradoodles is Indiana’s premier labradoodle breeder. We raise multi-generational Australian Labradoodle and Australian Bernedoodle puppies with a purpose. Our dogs are bred for their therapy-oriented temperaments and allergy-friendly coats.
What is a multi-generational Australian Labradoodle?
Multi-generational Australian Labradoodles are a cross between many different parent breeds. The breed originated in Australia in the 1980s with the intent of creating an allergy-friendly service dog for the blind. Australian Labradoodles are a combination of a Poodle, Labrador Retriever, English Cocker Spaniel, American Cocker Spaniel, and Irish Water dogs. These breeds were hand-selected for specific breed qualities to create the ideal service dog for those with allergies. Since then, the breed has continued on and spread across the world. Australian Labradoodles are now considered their own breed with its own breed clubs (ALAA and WALA).
