Why Australian Labradoodles Make Such Wonderful Family Dogs

Choosing the right dog is about much more than finding an adorable puppy. You want a companion whose personality, size, energy level, and needs fit comfortably into your family’s lifestyle. That is exactly why so many families fall in love with Australian Labradoodles.

Known for their affectionate personalities, intelligence, allergy-friendly coats, and wonderful family temperaments, Australian Labradoodles bring together many of the qualities people value most in a companion dog. At Colonial Village Labradoodles, we have seen firsthand how these special dogs become deeply loved members of their families.

They Are Loving and People-Oriented

Australian Labradoodles are known for forming close relationships with their people. They are affectionate, social, and happiest when they are included in everyday family life.

Whether your family enjoys neighborhood walks, weekend adventures, evenings on the couch, or time spent playing in the backyard, an Australian Labradoodle is usually eager to be part of it. Their friendly nature can make them wonderful companions for children, adults, and seniors.

Many Australian Labradoodles also do well with other dogs and household pets when they are introduced and socialized appropriately.

They Have Wonderful Family Temperaments

One of the most appealing qualities of the Australian Labradoodle is its friendly, adaptable temperament. The breed was originally developed with companionship and service work in mind, helping create dogs that are intelligent, attentive, and highly connected to people.

At Colonial Village Labradoodles, our dogs are bred for therapy-oriented temperaments. We use temperament evaluations to help us learn more about each puppy’s individual personality and match families with puppies that complement their homes and lifestyles.

Every puppy is unique. Some are outgoing and adventurous, while others are calm, gentle, or especially people-focused. Thoughtful matching helps create a strong foundation for a lifelong relationship.

They Are Smart and Eager to Learn

Australian Labradoodles are highly intelligent and typically enjoy learning alongside their owners. Their people-oriented nature often makes them responsive to positive, reward-based training.

They can learn household routines, basic obedience, manners, games, and more advanced skills. Their intelligence and sensitivity have also allowed many Australian Labradoodles to succeed as therapy dogs, emotional-support companions, and service dogs.

Of course, even the smartest puppy needs patience and consistency. Early training, positive socialization, and clear expectations help Australian Labradoodle puppies grow into confident and well-mannered adults.

Colonial Village Labradoodles offers puppies at different stages of training—from puppies going home at eight weeks to more extensively trained dogs—so families can choose the option that best fits their needs.

Their Coats Are Allergy-Friendly and Low-Shedding

For many families, the Australian Labradoodle’s beautiful fleece coat is a major advantage. These coats are generally low-shedding and allergy-friendly, meaning families often notice much less loose hair around their homes, on their clothing, and on their furniture.

No dog can be guaranteed to be completely hypoallergenic for every person, but a properly bred Australian Labradoodle may be a good option for many people who are sensitive to shedding dogs.

Their soft, wavy or curly coats do require regular care. Brushing helps prevent tangles and matting, while professional grooming keeps the coat comfortable and healthy. Most adult Australian Labradoodles benefit from grooming appointments approximately every four to six weeks.

They Come in Sizes to Fit Different Families

Australian Labradoodles are available in several sizes, making it easier for families to find a dog that fits their home and lifestyle.

  • Mini Australian Labradoodles are generally 25 pounds or less.
  • Medium Australian Labradoodles are typically between 25 and 45 pounds.
  • Standard Australian Labradoodles are generally larger than 45 pounds.

While adult size can never be predicted with absolute certainty, responsible breeding and knowledge of a puppy’s parents and pedigree can provide a helpful estimate.

Their Colors and Coat Patterns Are Beautiful

Australian Labradoodles come in a wonderful variety of colors, including chocolate, black, cream, apricot, red, and caramel. Their coats may be solid or display patterns such as parti, tuxedo, phantom, or sable.

While coat color may catch your attention first, temperament and compatibility should always be the most important considerations when choosing a puppy. The right puppy is the one whose personality and needs are the best match for your family.

They Can Adapt to Many Different Lifestyles

Australian Labradoodles can thrive in many types of homes when they receive appropriate exercise, enrichment, companionship, and training. They can enjoy an active household filled with children just as much as a quieter home with one or two adults.

Because they are social dogs, they generally do best when they are treated as part of the family. Daily walks, playtime, training activities, and plenty of time with their people help keep them physically and emotionally fulfilled.

A puppy’s temperament and health are influenced by both genetics and the care received during the earliest weeks of life. That is why choosing an experienced, responsible breeder is so important.

About CVL

Colonial Village Labradoodles is Indiana’s premier labradoodle breeder. We raise multi-generational Australian Labradoodle and Australian Bernedoodle puppies with a purpose. Our dogs are bred for their therapy-oriented temperaments and allergy-friendly coats.

What is a multi-generational Australian Labradoodle?

Multi-generational Australian Labradoodles are a cross between many different parent breeds. The breed originated in Australia in the 1980s with the intent of creating an allergy-friendly service dog for the blind. Australian Labradoodles are a combination of a Poodle, Labrador Retriever, English Cocker Spaniel, American Cocker Spaniel, and Irish Water dogs. These breeds were hand-selected for specific breed qualities to create the ideal service dog for those with allergies. Since then, the breed has continued on and spread across the world. Australian Labradoodles are now considered their own breed with its own breed clubs (ALAA and WALA).
