We have had numerous requests for only female puppies this Fall and I have been so surprised. Girls are always requested over boys and I want to expose this old wives tale of dog ownership.
First, there is no difference. It used to be that you wanted a boy over a girl as spays and neuters were not done and families did not want to deal with a female’s heat cycle or unplanned pregnancies. Some people than said that females were more desirable as they did not mark and were more emotionally attached to a family as unneutered males were known to wander to find a girl in heat!
We only send pet puppies home that have been spayed or neutered. This means that no sex based hormones are expressed. The boys’ testicles never fully distend so they are not inclined to “hike” their legs or mark. They are essentially adorable little eunuchs! We always say that the dog does not know what it is so feel free to call a boy, “Sue.” He does not know the difference!
