Potty training is arguably the hardest part of getting a new puppy. The hardest part of potty training is the schedule. It is often said that we can only expect a puppy to hold their bladder for however long they are in age, so your two month old puppy can probably only go two hours max without being taken out. That is a big schedule change for us! But, if we commit to the training it is well worth it in the long run.

The first thing you need to do is choose where your new pup needs to be going to the bathroom. Is that the back yard, the front yard, etc.? Once you choose that place, take them there each time it is time to go potty and say something along the lines of, “go potty” or “go to the bathroom.” Just say that same line every time. Once they do their business, immediately give them a treat for going in the right spot. They will not forget this reward!
Next, you will want to pay close attention for accidents so that you can intervene and correct the behavior. First, adjust your expectations to expect mistakes. It is inevitable. See these mistakes as an opportunity to teach your pup! If you catch them in the act of going potty/poo inside, calmly pick them up and take them to the right spot to be using the bathroom. Let them finish and clean up. No treat for this. If you don’t catch them in the act and find the mess after, it is time to bring out the carpet cleaner. Do your best to not direct anger or frustration towards your pet. They have already moved on and will not understand your frustration, damaging the bond you are building.
If you stay diligent and follow these steps, you will start to see progress as time goes on! It will unfortunately take a few accidents for them to start catching on. The older they get, the easier it is as they can go a bit longer between bathroom breaks.
