Place is such a great command for when life gets busy. When your home is chaotic at the holidays, you will be grateful that your pup knows their “place.” Essentially, we are going to choose a comfortable place, probably their dog bed (but it can be whatever you decide), and train them that it is their home base.
We will need to have mastered sit and stay before starting on training them to their place.
You will use the arm that is closest to the bed (or mat, or crate) and toss a treat onto it saying “place.” Once they go on the bed and take the treat, say “Yes!” You can tell them to sit, stay, down – whatever you want. Once you are ready to free them, say “free” and place a treat on the floor away from the bed. Repeat this entire sequence until they begin to learn this.
