While play biting is playful and cute for an eight-week-old puppy, this behavior becomes dangerous as they get older. Because of this, we want to prevent this behavior from every happening in the first place.

To work on nipping this behavior in the bud, you will want to begin working on this during play time. When your pup decides to use their teeth to play with you, immediately stop playing and say “ouch!” in a dramatic tone. We want them to think that this action was painful to us. They will not learn this on the first try, but after quite a few startled “ouch!” yelps, they will begin to catch on.

It is important to never match puppy “aggression” with your own aggression. It is never okay or helpful to hit, shake, or kick a puppy. Nor is it helpful to grab their muzzle to keep them from nipping at you.

If your puppy has a hard time with this, you may want to speak with your vet! But, this lesson takes time, so stay strong and consistent.
