Puppy Care

Recommended Supplies

At Colonial Village Labradoodles, we want to offer as much direction and advice possible in order to create a healthy and happy environment for you and your furry friend! Here is a list of recommended supplies and tricks to support you as you train and care for your dog!

Doodle Brush– Our friend and fellow breeder, Alastair McKinney, developed this for his dogs at Lomond Hills in Scotland. This brush works wonders on your adult labradoodle’s coat. It may be pricey, but your doodle and groomer will thank you for reducing matts!

Firm Up!– This dried pumpkin powder is nature’s miracle helper for  dog’s digestive systems! It works to form up stools or can help a constipated dog. We sprinkle a dry tablespoon on food as needed.

Heartbeat Puppy– This brilliant invention reminds me of a sound machine or a heartbeat stuffed animal used for little kiddos. This stuffed puppy comforts a new puppy for the first few weeks it is away from its litter. It has a plastic heart that is battery operated to beat it also includes a heat pack to warm up the stuffed animal and allows it to comfort your new puppy the way their siblings would. Just brilliant!

Cheerios for Training- Why buy expensive dog treats that run the risk of being recalled? We use Cheerios for the same reason parents feed it to their babies. It is gentle on their stomachs, and they are healthy for your pup. Just make sure that they are the plain Cheerios and not the Honey Nut version!

Pine Pellets from TSC– We litter box train all our puppies before they head home. It is so funny to watch a little 6-week-old puppy toddle over to use the litter box tray. We send all CVL, pet puppies’ home with a bag of pine pellets from Tractor Supply. You place them in your yard and carry your puppy to the litter box spot for the first few weeks to mark the soil and then dispose of all pine pellets and excrement. This is a Pavlovian trick for house breaking. X marks the spot!

About CVL

Colonial Village Labradoodles is Indiana’s premier labradoodle breeder. We raise multi-generational Australian Labradoodle and Australian Bernedoodle puppies with a purpose. Our dogs are bred for their therapy-oriented temperaments and allergy-friendly coats.

What is a multi-generational Australian Labradoodle?

Multi-generational Australian Labradoodles are a cross between many different parent breeds. The breed originated in Australia in the 1980s with the intent of creating an allergy-friendly service dog for the blind. Australian Labradoodles are a combination of a Poodle, Labrador Retriever, English Cocker Spaniel, American Cocker Spaniel, and Irish Water dogs. These breeds were hand-selected for specific breed qualities to create the ideal service dog for those with allergies. Since then, the breed has continued on and spread across the world. Australian Labradoodles are now considered their own breed with its own breed clubs (ALAA and WALA).
