What Does a Microchip Do?

A microchip is a small identification device placed beneath your puppy’s skin. Each chip contains a unique identification number that can be read with a microchip scanner.

If your dog ever becomes lost, a veterinarian, animal shelter or rescue organization can scan the chip. They can then use its identification number to locate your registration information and contact you.

The microchip itself does not contain your name, phone number or address. That information is stored in the registration company’s database, which is why completing the registration process is so important.

Remember to Keep Your Information Current

Microchip registration is not something you should complete once and forget. Update the account anytime you:

• Move to a new address

• Change your phone number

• Change your email address

• Transfer ownership of the dog

• Add or change an emergency contact

It is also a good idea to check your registration information once a year to make sure everything is still correct.
