Puppy Tips

Multi-dog Home

Are you considering adding another furry friend to your home? Adding another puppy to the home can be a hard decision, especially when you already have a dog. Being nervous about introducing another dog to your current furry friend is completely understandable! Here are some helpful tips when considering adding another puppy to your family:

  • An age gap will help avoid “littermate syndrome”. This is when two puppies become dependent upon each other, making it harder to adjust to a new home.
  • While having a large age gap between your puppy and dog is not an issue, do not have high expectations for them to be playmates. They will get along with each other, but likely have different play styles due to the age difference. Having another puppy over for a playdate is a great idea!
  • You will want to be prepared to deal with any behavioral concerns that your current dog has. Because dogs feed off each other’s actions, working on behavior individually before they are together is a great game plan.
  • It may be helpful to introduce both dogs while having them on leashes. Through this technique, you are allowing them to get to know each other while still being in control when needed.
  • Always be sure to reward positive behavior. Giving affection, treats, and praise will help encourage your dogs through this introductory phase.

What is a multi-generational Australian Labradoodle?

Multi-generational Australian Labradoodles are a cross between many different parent breeds. The breed originated in Australia in the 1980s with the intent of creating an allergy-friendly service dog for the blind. Australian Labradoodles are a combination of a Poodle, Labrador Retriever, English Cocker Spaniel, American Cocker Spaniel, and Irish Water dogs. These breeds were hand-selected for specific breed qualities to create the ideal service dog for those with allergies. Since then, the breed has continued on and spread across the world. Australian Labradoodles are now considered their own breed with its own breed clubs (ALAA and WALA).
